PRODUCT INFORMATION
Poxy-gard
High Build Epoxy Mastic Primer
S3508
Poxy-gard HB Epoxy Mastic Primer is an outstanding primer for
maintenance painting in highly corrosive areas. New technology used in this
primer allows it to penetrate adherent rust on pitted steel for optimum
protection of the surface. This penetrating, or "wetting" action,
allows this primer to be used over tight rust on the steel surface, encapsulating
the rust into the coating. This technology is superior to the "soap
type" wetting agents used in the past.
Poxy-gard HB Epoxy Mastic Primer has a high volume solids content
which provides excellent protection for sharp edges, corners, angles and
welds.
This product meets most local or governmental VOC restrictions and does
not contain lead or chromates. Poxy-gard High Build Epoxy Mastic Primer
is accepted by USDA for incidental food contact surfaces.

SURFACE PREPARATION: STEEL--Remove any oil or grease from surface
using clean rags saturated with Thinner S6684 (xylene). For non-severe or
non-immersion service, prepare in accordance with SSPC SP-3, Power Tool
Cleaning, or SSPC SP-2, Hand Tool Cleaning. An alternate would be to prepare
in accordance with SSPC-SP 6, Com- ercial Blast Cleaning. For severe chemical
exposure or immersion service, prepare according to SSPC SP-10, Near White
Metal Blast Cleaning.
MIXING: Using mechanical agitation, mix Base Component (S3508)
and Activator Component (S3598) 1 to 1 by volume. Allow a 30 minute induction
period prior to use.
POT LIFE: 4 hrs. @ 77°F (25°C)
SHELF LIFE: 1 year, inside storage at 40-100°F (4-38°C)
APPLICATION: Brush, roller or spray. If roller applied, use a
3/4"-l" nap roller (Wooster Professional R-241 or equal) and after
mixing base and activator components, add 20% by volume of Epoxy Roller
Additive (S3522) to the activated material while agitating. Should be applied
with a minimum air temperature of 40°F (4°C). Do not apply when
surface temperature is less than 5°F (3°C) above the dew point.
Suggested spray equipment: CONVENTIONAL--Binks #18 or #62 gun
with a #67 fluid tip and #67PB air cap. Devilbiss MBC-510 gun with 'E' fluid
tip and #704 air cap. AlRLESS--Use a 30 to 1 pump and a .017 to .023 tip
adjust pressure as needed.

(S3810), Armor-tar (S3910) Palgard Epoxy. Consult your Pratt & Lambert
representative for other recommendations.
THINNING: No reduction for brush or roller. Not normally required
for airless spray but may be thinned up to 10% per gallon of paint using
Thinner S6682. For conventional spray, thinning may be required, if so,
thin up to 10% per gallon of paint using Thinner S6682.

PERFORMANCE DATA
Performance: Extensive testing of Poxy-gard shows this coating
is among the best when compared to other epoxy mastics on the market. Since
it can also be used as a topcoat, a complete epoxy mastic system is possible,
and this will provide the best possible performance over pitted steel, sharp
edges and angles. The high film build, up to 10 mils per coat, allows maximum
protection with a minimum number of coats.
Sharp Edges: The ability of Poxy-gard to protect sharp edges is
one of the most important features. This is the area where many coatings
fail first and where the most protection is needed.
Wet-on-Wet Re-coat: Poxy-gard can be recoated "wet-on-wet"
with only 1 hour between coats at 77°F (25°C). With this procedure
up to 15 mils can be applied in 2 coats 1 hour apart. Do not exceed 15 mils
when using this method and it is only recommended when 2 coats of Poxy-gard
will be applied.
One Coat: For economy, a single coat of Poxy-gard Epoxy Mastic
can be used because of the high film build and the epoxy mastic properties.
One coat of this product will easily out perform two coats of other coatings
such as alkyds.
Adhesion to Old Coatings: Poxy-gard normally has excellent adhesion
to old coatings and can be used over old, fully cured alkyds. The old coating
should be in good condition and tightly adhering. A test patch is advisable.
This same procedure should be followed before re-coating fully cure films
of Poxy-gard Epoxy Mastic Primer.
