PRODUCT INFORMATION
Poxy-gard
Epoxy Mastic High Build (S35-line)
Poxy-gard Epoxy Mastic High Build is designed to specifically meet
the needs of maintenance painting in highly corrosive and abrasive environments.
The high solids content allows extra thick applications for sure protection
of sharp edges, corners, angles and welds. Poxy-gard is also an excellent
concrete floor coating. It provides excellent resistance to chemical spills
and provides superior wearing abilities.
Poxy-gard Epoxy Mastic dries to a hard, abrasion resistant finish
while providing decorative protection for various applications. Bonds directly
to steel and concrete and does not require a primer for most exposures.
Performance is enhanced for severe service, including immersion, when Poxy-gard
Epoxy Mastic Primer (S3508) or Poxy-gard R I P (S3301) is the initial coat
over abrasive-blasted steel.
This product meets most current VOC restrictions and does not
contain lead or chromates. Select colors conform to FDA Title 121, Section
2514 and are also accepted by USDA for incidental food contact surfaces.
Permeability Rating (ASTM D 1653): .154 mg/cm2 (perms)
Temperature Limit: 250°F (121°C) dry heat
Abrasion Resistance (ASTM D 4060): CS-17 wheel, 1000 cycles, 1000
gram load, 6.0-7.0 mils DFT; no more than 84 mg loss after 1000 cycles.

GLOSS: semi-gloss
FLASH POINT: 59°F (15°C) closed cup, activated
SOLIDS BY VOLUME: 75.0% (avg. of colors)
VOC: 2.16 lbs/gal (260 g/l); 2.64 lbs/gal (317 g/l) reduced 10%
RECOMMENDED FILM THICKNESS: 5-10 dry mils per coat (6.5 - 13 mils
wet)
SPREADING RATE: Approximately 240 square feet per gallon for 5
mils dry film and 120 square feet per gallon for 10 dry mils (theoretical).
SURFACE PREPARATION: STEEL-- Surface should be free of all oil,
grease, dirt or other contaminants and must be dry. For non-severe exposure,
recommended surface preparation is SSPC-SP 6, Commercial Blast Cleaning;
however, for certain applications, SSPC-SP 3, Power Tool Cleaning is sufficient.
For severe chemical exposure, prepare in accordance with SSPC SP-10, Near
White Metal Blast Cleaning. FOR IMMERSION application or areas that will
be exposed to highly corrosive environments, steel should be primed as recommended.
CONCRETE--Glaze or laitance must be removed from new surfaces by
brush-abrasive blasting or on horizontal surfaces by muriatic acid etching.
All dirt, grease, waxes, curing compounds or foreign contaminants must be
removed from the surface.
MIXING: Using mechanical agitation, mix Base Component (S35-line)
and Activator Component (S3598) 1 to l by volume. Allow a 30 minute induction
period prior to use.
POT LIFE: 4 hrs. @ 77°F (25°C)
SHELF LIFE: 1 year, inside storage at 40-100°F (4-38°C)
APPLICATION: Brush, roller or spray. If roller applied, use a
3/4" to 1" Nap roller (Wooster Professional R-241 or equal) and
after mixing base and activator components, add 20% by volume of Epoxy Roller
Additive (S3522) to the activated material while agitating. (With the addition
of 20% Roller Additive, VOC for this product will be 2.68 Ibs/gal (322 g/1).
Suggested spray equipment:
CONVENTIONAL--Binks #18 or #62 gun with #67 fluid tip and #67PB air cap.
DeVilbiss MBC-510 gun with "E" fluid tip and #64 air cap.
AIRLESS--Use a 30:1 pump and a .017 to .023 tip. Adjust pressure as needed.
DRYING TIME @ 50% Relative Humidity:
...................................100°F.............75°F...........50°F
Set to touch ...............1 1/2 hrs.........2 hrs..........4 hrs.
Set to handle ..............4 1/2 hrs.........8 hrs.........24 hrs
Dry to re-coat ............4 1/2 hrs.........8 hrs.........24 hrs.
PRIMERS: Poxy-gard. Epoxy Mastic Primer (S3508) or Poxygard Epoxy
R I P (S3301)
TOPCOATS: Endu-thane HB Urethane (S28-line) and many others. Consult your
Pratt & Lambert representative for recommendations.
THINNING: No reduction for brush or roller. Not normally required
for airless spray but may be thinned up to 10% per gallon using Thinner
S6682. For Conventional Spray, thin up to 10% per gallon using Thinner S6682.
CLEAN UP: Thinner Blend S6682 or MEK.
Performance Data
Extensive testing of Poxy-gard show this coating will out perform any
other epoxy high build. Since it can also be used as a topcoat, a complete
epoxy high build system is possible, and this will provide the best possible
performance over pitted steel, sharp edges, and angles. The high film build,
up to 10 mils per coat, allows the maximum protection with a minimum number
of coats.
Sharp Edges: The ability of Poxy-gard to protect sharp edges is
one of the most important features. This is the area where many coatings
fail first and where the most protection is needed.
Wet on Wet Re-coat: Poxy-gard can be recoated "wet on wet"
with only l hour between coats at 77°F (25°C). With this procedure
up to 15 mils can be applied in 2 coats 1 hour apart. Do not exceed 15 mils
when using this method and it is only recommended when 2 coats of Poxy-gard
S35-line will be applied.
One Coat: For economy, a single coat of Poxy-gard epoxy High Build
can be used because of the high film build properties. One coat of this
product will easily out perform two coats of other coatings such as alkyds,
etc.
Adhesion to Old Coatings: Poxy-gard normally has excellent adhesion
to old coatings and can be used over old, fully cured alkyds. The old coatings
should be in good condition and tightly adhering. A test patch is advisable.
Systems: A wide range of systems are possible with Poxy-gard S35-line,
see Coatings Systems Selector in the Pratt & Lambert product brochure.
