The techniques of decorative finishes, also known as broken colour work or paint effects, have been a closely-guarded secret of the decorating specialists for many years. The basic principle, however, is very simple: By using a glaze, traditionally known as scumble, which will retain a pattern, the surface can be 'worked' or 'broken' using such tools as brushes, rags, polythene, sponges and combs to produced the desired effect. Traditionally, glazes have been oil based, since acrylic emulsions, or latexes, dry too quickly. However, the increased popularity of decorative finishes in recent years has highlighted the inherent problems with oil-based glazes - slow drying, dangerous fumes, yellowing with age, and the need for solvents for thinning and tool-cleaning. The key to the success of Polyvine's glazes is their ability to hold water and 'stay' open for long periods. They therefore have all the advantages of oil-based glazes with none of the disadvantages - they are easy and pleasant to use, they emit no toxic fumes, they do not yellow with age, and brushes and tools are cleaned with water. GLAZE (SCUMBLE) Polyvine Acrylic Scumble is a clear water-based transparent glaze for the totally safe application of broken colour work (rag-rolling, stippling, marbling, wood-graining, etc. Polyvine Scumble produces a translucent, waxy finish reminiscent of traditional oil glazes. Polyvine Scumble dries to a durable water-resistant finish and does not age or yellow. It provides good working time and can be applied over acrylic eggshell paints and vinyl silk emulsion/satin latex. For use in temperatures above 21 ° C (70 ° F) Tropical Grade Scumble gives extended open time.
CLASSIC COLOUR A major breakthrough in acrylic paint technology, Polvine Classic Colour eliminates the need to mix colour by using emulsion paint/latex as the colouring medium. Classic Colour is ideal for colour washes. Classic Colour remains workable for up to 1 hour, enabling the wet surface to be textured using a rag, sponge, polythene, stiff brush, etc.
